My Top Picks in Each Category:
🥢 Best Sit-Down Restaurant: Sushizen
Affordable | Chirashi Bowl | Reservations Recommended
Sushizen serves one of the best chirashi bowls I’ve ever had. The top layer is covered with a delicate egg (usuyaki tamago), and underneath, you’ll find an incredible variety of sashimi. It’s a generous portion at a great price. Expect a queue, but you can also call ahead to make a reservation.
🍙 Best Take-Out Food: Gochisou Yakimusubi Onimaru
Unique Onigiri | Hidden Gem | Limited Seating
This isn’t your typical konbini onigiri! Grab a basket and load up on options like eel nigiri or shrimp tempura brie cheese nigiri. There’s limited seating upstairs if you want to eat on-site, plus restrooms—a rare find in small take-out spots.
🥖 Best Bakery: Maruki Bakery
Local Favorite | Fresh Baked Daily | Woman-Owned
Tucked away in a quiet residential area, this bakery is an absolute gem. I first discovered it when I lived nearby, and my husband loves it just as much as I do. The bread is baked fresh throughout the day, and during lunch hours, you’ll likely see a long line. It’s also heartwarming to see a team of women working together. Try as many items as you can—it’s incredibly affordable!
🍦Best Dessert: Nanaya Kyoto Sanjo Shop
7 Levels of Matcha | Must-Try Black Matcha & Black Sesame | Limited Seating
Matcha lovers, this one’s for you! Nanaya offers seven intensity levels of matcha ice cream. I highly recommend trying No. 7 matcha and their black sesame ice cream. There’s a small seating area at the back of the shop, but it fills up quickly.
☕ Best Coffee Café: Ogawa Coffee Sakaimachi Nishiki
Specialty Coffee | Must-Try Soubi & Tamago Sando | Garden Seating
Their Soubi coffee is a must-try—made with non-alcoholic gin infused with roses and spices, maple syrup, and flannel drip coffee. The contrast between the cold cream and hot coffee is amazing. Also, don’t skip their tamago sando, made with house-baked bread. Expect an hour-long wait unless you arrive before opening. Bonus: Ask to be seated near the garden!
🍵 Best Matcha Café: Premium Matcha & Bar Kashoan
High-Quality Matcha | Pricey but Worth It | Hidden Garden
This spot serves some of the highest-quality matcha drinks I’ve had in Kyoto. Yes, it’s a bit pricey, but you can taste the difference. Bonus: There’s a lovely garden near the bar for a peaceful escape.
🍺 Best Brewery: Stand Umineko
Craft Beer | Friendly Staff | Upstairs Seating Available
Craft beer is still growing in Japan, and this spot does it right. The staff is super friendly, and if you prefer to sit instead of stand, ask for upstairs seating. Bonus: Their merch is limited-edition and has some of the coolest designs—I highly recommend grabbing something!
🍸 Best Cocktails: Mayday coffee&bar
Creative Cocktails | 🍵 Must-Try Matcha Tiramisu Cocktail | 🎭 Cozy Decor
This bar is pure magic. Each cocktail is unique and incredibly well-crafted, but the matcha tiramisu cocktail is unforgettable. The owner/bartender speaks English and will happily recommend drinks based on your preferences. The cozy, charming decor makes it an even better experience.
🍶 Best All-You-Can-Drink Spot: Oniwa Kawaramachi store
990 Yen Nomihoudai | Yakitori & Small Bites | Rooftop City View
Yes, you read that right—all-you-can-drink alcohol for just 990 yen when you order 1-2 appetizers! They also serve delicious yakitori and small plates. Bonus: It’s located on the 9th floor, so you get an amazing view of Kyoto at night.
🎁 Best Shopping Spot: Inobun
Local Goods & Souvenirs | Multi-Floor Shopping | Rooftop Terrace
If you’re looking for a one-stop shop for gifts and souvenirs, Inobun is the place to go. You’ll find beautifully curated local goods across multiple floors, and you could easily spend an hour here. Bonus: There’s a rooftop terrace where you can sit and relax.
